Título | Excidium

Este trabalho de colagem analógica foi realizado a partir da leitura dos textos da jornalista e ensaísta Elizabeth Kolbert. Em seu livro “The Sixth Extinction: an unnatural history” (2015), a autora evidencia um conjunto alarmante de fatos relacionados à atual extinção em massa provocada pela humanidade. O parágrafo de encerramento nos dá uma ideia da dimensão das consequências que já se fazem presentes:

Obviously, the fate of our own species concerns us disproportionately. But at the risk of sounding anti-human – some of my best friends are humans! – I will say that it is not, in the end, what’s most worth attending to. Right now, in the amazing moment that to us counts as the present, we are deciding, without quite meaning to, which evolutionary pathways will remain open and which will forever be closed. No other creature has ever managed this, and it will, unfortunately, be our most enduring legacy. The Sixth Extinction will continue to determine the course of life long after everything people have written and painted and built has been ground into dust and giant rats have – or have not – inherited the earth. (Kolbert, 2015, p. 268).

Em contrapartida, seu livro mais recente, “Under a white sky: the nature of the future” (Kolbet, 2021), dedica-se a relatar iniciativas de pessoas que agem no sentido de reverter o curso do desastre ambiental:

One way to make sense of the biodiversity crisis would simply be to accept it. The history of life has, after all, been punctuated by extinction events, both big and very big. The impact that brought an end to the Cretaceous wiped out something like seventy-five percent of all species on earth. No one wept for them, and eventually, new species evolved to take their place. But for whatever reason – call it biophilia, call it care for God’s creation, call it heart stopping fear – people are reluctant to be the asteroid. (Kolbert, 2021, p. 83).

No decorrer do presente processo artístico, as leituras foram atravessadas a todo momento pelas experiências recentes do artista: seu testemunho da colisão meteórica da política(gem) e da cobiça por poder sobre as sutis – porém indescritivelmente monumentais – teias formadas entre incontáveis seres não humanos, habitantes de um pequeno lugar (pretensamente) protegido pelo poder público. Assim, no curso da tesoura e no toque da cola, em trânsito por tudo aquilo avesso ao arco da razão, as (des/re)montagens do papel criaram inesperados campos sensoriais sinestésicos que surgiam ora barulhentos, ora silenciosos, remetendo às revelações alarmantes do músico e ecologista de paisagens sonoras Bernie Krause: “A great silence is spreading over the natural world even as the sound of man is becoming deafening” (Vidal, 2012). Ao despontar sobre a tela, os enredos retornavam agudos fragmentos de memória, sonhos, presságios, enfim, terríveis lembranças evocadas pelas palavras de Elizabeth Kolbert (2009, p. 110): “Here we are, quadrillions of bytes deep into the Information Age. And yet information, it seems, has never mattered less.”
